Wisdom of Crowds: Bull Weight Winner

By: Lara Serbin, Buckeye Main Street Coalition A bull waited in a pen by the Buckeye Rotary Beer Saloon, a dog sat in the dusty shade under a table surrounded by rodeo fans having a few cold ones waiting for Buckeye Days Senior Pro Rodeo to start at 3PM last January 30th, 2016. What makes a crowd guess the weight of a bull? Some say if you ask enough people the same question, they might come up with better answers than even the butcher. Waiting for the winner to collect $500.00 winnings at Jones Ford on Yuma Road just South of Interstate 10,...

Buckeye Days Steak Dinner and Auction

As deep stretched shadows crept into the night and the last ferocious bull returned to the chute, Dan Fowley the announcer of the Buckeye Days Senior Pro Rodeo belted out in his animated throaty style that it’s time for steak dinner and auction! Stands were packed to the brim last Saturday January 30th  at the Helzapoppin’ Arena on Miller Road in Downtown Historic Buckeye, Arizona which meant tons of hungry rodeo fans lining up for steak dinner at about 5 o’clock.  Marlyn Gregerson a retired Arizona Machinery employee, Sam Rose and Jay...

Lara Serbin, Buckeye Main Street Coalition It is always exciting times during Buckeye Days, January 23, 30th and 31st will be even more memorable with Bob Boze Bell, owner of True West Magazine coming to the Cattle Drive as the Grand Marshal.  There are many ways to learn who this Arizona Kingman native is by reading his Raised on the Mother Road The 66 Kid: a scrapbook style autobiography which is an easy, hilarious read.  BBB interjects stories of his childhood along the Mother Road  with his amazing watercolors and ink sketches...

Buckeye Days 2016: Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show Part 2

The sun was getting too intense so I crossed the canal, said “Howdy!” to the peacocks walking around in the shade of the citrus grove and headed over to see fancy trick roping. I quickly came to realize that the famous Cowboy Steve had a knack for picking the perfect volunteer. The little girl CS picked looked adorable in the huge red foam floppy cowboy hat CS crowned her with. He gave her a lasso and had her going pretty well, then told her he was going to leave and she would have to carry the show for the next 30 minutes. She...

Buckeye Days 2016: Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show

Dust off your Roy Rogers, Injun Joe or Annie Oakley period clothes and head over to Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show January 30th and 31st of  2016 in downtown Historic Buckeye. I went to his last show at Historic Sahuaro Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. Situated along the dirt paths and orchards of fruit trees were stages for shows like Pistol Packin’ Paula and Gary “Bad Dog” Bennett & Blue Eyes Jack. As I walked past a brick fruit packing building built in the 1800’s I heard gun shots at the Cowboy Fast Draw Association, women and men were lined up...

Buckeye Bags Made from Main Street Banners

By: Lara Serbin, Buckeye Main Street Coalition Initially, the idea of making totes out of vintage Main Street banners came from National Main Street Conference in Detroit last year. Those who went received unique totes made from pieces of banners to carry our conference stuff. My tote had a hamburger on it from an old Wendy’s banner. Working together, Buckeye Main Street Coalition members figured out how to make our own banner bags. Charlene Powers one of the founding members of the Coalition has saved banners used on Monroe Avenue since the...

Main Street Learns from Madison, Georgia

By: Lara Serbin, Buckeye Main Street Coalition Last month was the National Main Streets Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The Buckeye Main Street Coalition members Jay Broadbent, Charlene Powers, Brian and Kristi McAchran and Lara Serbin were fortunate to attend this important event.   We had many opportunities to talk to others who are doing similar events, facade improvements and fundraising.  We saw a different perspective on how to improve historic downtown Buckeye.
